Reviews and Reader ResponsesReview: Ouch, this kills me (Mrs. DeLuca) to say....this finale to the Twilight series was a BIG letdown. I won't give any spoilers and I hope you will still read it and form your own conclusions, but I wish I hadn't read it. The romantic tension in the other books is gone. Really, that was the driving force behind the series besides the great character development. At least I can report that the jibes between Jacob and Rosalie were thoroughly worth reading. I was really hoping for the feeling I got when I’d finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. When it ended, I felt the author had kept my interest peaked and I felt good and satisfied that she did justice by her heroes. Breaking Dawn had surprising plot twists, but they seemed so out of the Twilight style that I have to believe Stephenie Meyers was way too pressured to finish and she didn't have the quiet contemplation time to really let it naturally develop in her mind. If you compare photos of the author prior to the Breaking Dawn release and after, you can see the touring really took its toll. I have to believe stress ruined this last book and that there was a much better conclusion inside Stephenie that never came out since she was SO AMAZING when she wrote her other books. I really hope that after some RR time with her family, Stephenie continues to write. I have high hopes for that next novel. Title: Breaking Dawn Author: Stephenie Meyers Rating: 2 Review: This late 1800 period book was interesting in some ways and not in others. Since I had just finished studying the Romantic Era in book club, I enjoyed seeing stuff about the symbology of flowers and the prudish customs. I hoped there would be more romance especially with Gemma and the guy who followed her from India. Instead there were these really sexy dreams that almost made this book a high school choice.
Gemma was supposed to be a strong female character like a role model, but she let herself get bossed around by the private school clique. She drank whiskey, lied, and broke school rules. I wanted to like her for trying to help her friends out of tough situations and for trying to be a less passive woman in the confines of Victorian society, but she wasn't worthy enough. I heard that the following two sequels are good, so I will give them a chance. Maybe Gemma's character will be redeamed in them.
